UoE Libraries: Planning for reopening

Information on plans to reopen the libraries following Covid-19 closure

Safe & healthy reopening

IMPORTANT! Before visiting, log into your ELE (Exeter Learning Environment) and check your reading list, materials will be available online. Please use these digital resources, as the physical library is operating at a reduced capacity. Use Library search to find all material. Live Web Chat is available Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00 and Sat-Sun 10:00- 18:00 for all library enquiries. We are here to help!

Additional COVID-19 health & safety measures in our physical libraries:


  • Must be booked in advance.  Book here.
  • Must be cleaned before use (by the student) and left clear for next student
  • Are spaced to allow 2m physical distancing
  • Cleaning stations will be in place throughout libraries to provide Protect spray and "blue roll" (to clean desks before and after use)


  • You must bring your own device 
  • Shared computers have been removed from libraries because of the risk of COVID contamination
  • A small number of bookable computer spaces are available via the booking system.Book here.


  • Documents can be sent from your device to the 'MOBILE_FOLLOWME' printer, instructions available online
  • Documents can be sent to email and collected from printer
  • Allow 2m physical distancing while queuing
  • Must be cleaned before and after use


  • Available at entrances, exits, throughout spaces and near our self-service kiosks
  • Use regularly

NEW ROUTES through the library, including "Give way" signs, which will:

  • Help manage possible pinch points
  • Allow students some freer movement to locate books and maintain physical distance


  • Furniture has been removed to allow sufficient space for physical distancing


  • Everyone in the library is required to wear a face covering
    • Please note that library staff cannot enforce wearing of face coverings


  • Water is allowed
  • Eating is not allowed in libraries because of the risk of COVID contamination
  • Please find an eating space outside of the library to take a break and eat


  • Overnight access may be suspended to
    • Allow for cleaning
    • Avoid uncontrolled occupancy 


  • Occupancy levels will be monitored
  • Access will be restricted, as needed

Studying safely on campus

  • Wear a face covering when inside buildings on our campus
  • Hand sanitiser will be available at approved entrances / exits to buildings
  • Consistent & clear signage will set out how to use each building safely
  • Enhanced cleaning arrangements are in place across campus
  • Use SafeZone, an online app

 Your campus experience 

  • Spaces will be limited in all outlets and facilities on reopening, due to social distancing guidelines.
  •  ‘Here to Help’ staff will answer queries and help direct and support you around buildings in a COVID-secure way.  You’ll find them in teaching buildings, near study spaces, in and around marquees and in other potentially busy areas.  ‘Here to Help’ staff will be a first point of contact to advise on where to find services, advise on capacity of areas, cleaning practices and signpost you to digital and telephone help services.
