CILIP Professional Registration - Library Support Group: Mentors and Mentoring

Mentors

If you are undertaking a Professional Registration Qualification then you have to find a mentor.  A dedicated mentor will help you take a fresh look at your skills and experiences, discover new ideas and perspectives, and provide support through the process.

CILIP recommend you choose a mentor in a different sort of organisation from yourself. This will make it easier to discuss service performance objectively and helps with acquiring wider professional knowledge. Though you may choose a CILIP mentor within your organisation, your line manager must not be your mentor as this would make it difficult to evaluate things objectively.

They have to be registered with CILIP so you may need to look for one outside your area - this important relationship does not have to be undertaken face to face it can take place via e-mail, phone, Teams, Zoom or via whatever technology you are both comfortable with.

Becoming a Mentor

All members who hold a level of Professional Registration can apply to become mentors for those working toward their own level of Professional Registration. To enrol as a mentor, you need to register your interest and attend a mentor training session. Training is organised regionally by your Mentor Support Officer (MSO).

Mentors support candidates working on Certification, Chartership and Fellowship. They understand the Professional Registration processes, are trained in mentoring skills and becoming a mentor can improve your ability to develop and nurture your own staff while learning new ideas and approaches from other professionals. Many mentors value the feeling of 'giving something back' to the profession too.

On the 2nd December 2013, the new regulations for Professional Registration came into effect.

These include new assessment criteria, new processes and new requirements for Certification, Chartership, Fellowship and Revalidation submissions.

This webinar was recorded on the 28th February 2014 and is designed to outline these changes to mentors. There will be further webinars and opportunities to attend face to face briefings in future. However, this webinar gives Mentors the opportunity to receive an update at a time and location to suit them.
