Statistical Software Support

Introduction

Statistics is a branch of science that deals with the collection, organization and analysis of data, and drawing conclusions from samples, e.g., for the entire population. This requires appropriate study design, sample selection, and statistical test selection.

The Test Chooser is an example implementation of selected statistical methods, currently for the following software: Excel, SPSS, R-programming, Jamovi. The chart above shows supported methods.

Please follow the guidance below when watching the example videos for supported statistical methods.

  1. Select the test chooser software type (Excel, SPSS, RStudio, Jamovi).
  2. Identify the variable’s type. Variable type definitions and examples are shown below:
    • Nominal variable is a qualitative variable where there is no possible or implied order in the levels, such as: yes/no questions; blue/green/brown/hazel eyes.
    • Ordinal variable classifies data while introducing an order or ranking. Consider the four ranks of income distribution: low, lower-middle, upper-middle and high-income.
    • A discrete variable is a variable whose value is obtained by counting, such as: the population of a country; number of people injured by car accidents.
    • Continuous variables are variables for which the values are not countable and have an infinite number of possibilities. Examples include age; weight; height. Each of these variables could correspond to any positive number e.g., 40 years old; 3 tonnes/100 lb; 70m.
    • A dependent variable is a variable that other factors or variables can change and influence. The dependent variable is usually the variable that is observed and measured in an experiment.
    • An independent variable is a variable in an experiment that does not change or is not affected by another variable in the test. Age is an example of an independent variable, where a person lives or what they eat does not change their age.
  3. After identifying the variable type, select the right method of variable type, or the relationship between variables.

Note: The Test Chooser does not support every statistical method yet. The flowchart shows the supported methods. It will be updated regularly, and new methods/different software support added for students in the future.
