The Study Skills team are delivering a series of academic writing workshops which are repeated throughout the academic year. Students from the Doctoral College are invited to register on these events as needed.
All the workshops are delivered online via MS Teams and are repeated each academic term.

Academic reading & note-making: becoming a critical reader
This workshop will explore strategies for effective academic reading and note-taking. We will discuss how to use the domains of critical reading to develop writing that is objective and questioning.
Managing your time
Juggling the demands of postgraduate research can be challenging so this session will explore time management strategies and tools that you can use to keep your thesis on track.
Citation & synthesis in academic writing
In this session we will recap the function of referencing/citation, discuss how to paraphrase effectively and how to bring multiple pieces of evidence together as synthesis in your writing.
Planning and structuring academic writing
This workshop will present strategies for planning your writing, such as linear templates and mind maps. We will also discuss how to structure your writing effectively through tools such as PEEL.
Criticality in academic writing
This session focusses on how to incorporate criticality into your academic writing. It will also explore how writing can be improved through language and phrasing.
Writing a literature review
The purpose of a literature review will be explored, along with planning, structuring and writing strategies. The session will consider the characteristics of an effective literature review and literature searching.
Academic writing: presentations & posters
This workshop will consider different forms of academic communication through verbal presentations and research poster displays. We will explore how to successfully express key information concisely and in an engaging manner, whilst maintaining academic standards and conventions.
Proof, edit and perfect the thesis
In this workshop we will discuss the thesis editing process, tools that be used to make it easier and establish the differences between editing and proofreading.
Statistical Analysis: Recapping the basics
This session will provide a recap of fundamental principles required for successful statistical analysis such as, variables, assumption testing and choosing the right test.
