Library Together Apart

The Libraries buildings remain closed with library staff working remotely to support you.  You can contact us by email library@exeter.ac.uk or chat with us online.  The Library's priority is to keep all its library users and library staff safe and well supported, and we are keeping our services under constant review to provide the very best support we can.

A small crew of library staff have limited access to the Forum Library to support "Click and collect" and "Scan and deliver" services to support University Research Restart plans.  You can find out more about this on our FAQs page.

The team are also working to clear a huge backlog of library materials that has built up whilst the library was closed. Whilst the buildings remain closed, we are recommending that you hold on to any library books.  We'll advise later once books can be safely returned.   If that is not possible, perhaps because you are a finalist student leaving Exeter, then please check out the guidance on our FAQs about return options.

We are so proud of our staff who have volunteered to help with this effort. We needed to significantly reduce the number of library staff on site during this phase, so have just a few members of staff beavering way.  To keep all staff and users safe, they are working under stringent safety protocols: wearing face coverings, practising physical distancing and cleaning/sanitising equipment and surfaces.  One of their first tasks will be to sort all the backlog of returned books and new books, and store them securely for a 3 day quarantine period to ensure they are safe for subsequent use.

We thought we'd share a few photos to show you what a huge effort the team are putting in.

These represent just a selection of the material. Other book mountains are stored elsewhere on campus, awaiting our attention. You can see why we are recommending that you hold on to library books, if you possibly can!

We are hugely appreciative of the help we have received from other teams within the University to support this endeavour.  The advice and guidance from the Health & Safety and Estates Teams has been invaluable in helping us prepare for this activity.  We have been well supplied with the cleaning materials we need to keep ourselves safe, and the University Mail Room and Transport Teams have put in a stellar effort to retrieve and deliver library books to the library from student residences all around the campus and the city, not to mention dealing with all the items arriving by post.

It will be some time before the library services and buildings fully reopen.  This will need to be a staged approach, based on health and safety guidance to ensure we keep all staff and users safe.

Please do get in touch with us via library@exeter.ac.uk  if you have any library questions.  These are unprecedented times for us all, and we will continue to do our very best to support you and connect you with the materials you need.
