Copyright support

Single sign on

Enter your University email address and password to authenticate using 'Single sign on'.

Use library search to find ebooks in our collections:  https://librarysearch.exeter.ac.uk/discovery/search

Once you have typed your keywords in the search box you can 'Refine your results' by selecting your preferred options in the column on the left.  For example, you could select: 'Available online' to avoid scrolling through titles that are not available to you unless you can visit the libraries in person.

Library account and borrowing

Library account

Your online library account will be automatically created once you have competed registration as a student with an enrolment status of 'currently enrolled' and you have activated your IT account.  .

Email library@exeter.ac.uk or click on 'Ask us' for live chat for us to confirm that your account has been created.

You will not need a physical library card (Unicard) in order to access online resources.  You will need a Unicard to swipe into library buildings and to use our self service borrowing kiosks

 

Single sign on

To log in to your library account or to online resources you should use the 'single sign on' option and enter your University email address and password.

 

Resetting your password

If you need to reset your password you should phone Exeter IT on 01392 72 50 50

Requesting your Unicard

You can request a Unicard via the Unicard Application portal.  You will need a Unicard to swipe into library buildings and to use our self service borrowing kiosks.

 

Online/Distance Learners

If you are on an official distance learning or online course please log an enquiry in SID Online with the category “Unicard distance learner request” to confirm the address you would like your card to be posted to.  NB You will login to SID with your username abc123  rather than your full email address.

 

CEDAR Students (Clinical Education Development and Research)

If you are not based in Exeter / unable to collect your Unicard on campus please log an enquiry in SID Online with the category “Unicard distance learner request” to confirm the address you would like your card to be posted to.  NB You will login to SID with your username abc123  rather than your full email address.

 

Degree Apprenticeships

If you are on a Degree Apprenticeship please log an enquiry in SID Online with the category “Unicard Request – Degree Apprenticeship” to request your card. NB You will login to SID with your username abc123  rather than your full email address.

Online students

Students registered on Online courses will be expected to use online resources only.

 

Borrowing

Distance Learners and registered Partnership students are welcome to borrow books on Campus. You will need a Unicard to swipe into library buildings and to use our self service borrowing kiosks. You should ask to get a Unicard printed at the following locations depending which is your home Campus: Cornwall Card Office (Penryn), info@stlukes (St Luke's) or Forum Student Information Desk (Streatham). 

Once your card number is on our library management system you will be able to use our self service borrowing kiosks.  Where there is a short delay updating the card number in our system our library enquiry desk staff will be happy to loan items to you during staffed hours. 

 

Recalls

Recalled books should be returned within a week where possible.  If a recalled item cannot be returned please email library@exeter.ac.uk so that we can find the best solution for you and the requester.

 

Renewals

Most loans automatically renew each week unless the account expiry date has been reached or the item has been recalled.

 

Returns

Books can be returned in person at any of our Campus libraries or by second class post.  Click for further details on in person returns.  There are further instructions for Postal loan returns here.

Requesting chapter and article scans and postal loans

Requesting scans and postal loans

You can request a scan or postal loan within the UK of items held in our collections via this form if you are unable to visit Campus and have an AccessAbility  Individual learning Plan (ILP).

Library staff will aim to supply:

  • Links to e-books or online articles, where available
  • PDF scans of chapters, articles or pages, from print material (within copyright limits 1 chapter or 10% of a single work)
  • Print books or audio-visual material, where no digital copy is available

 

If your circumstances mean you are unable to visit campus and you cannot access materials you need digitally please email library@exeter.ac.uk  We will work with our Liaison Librarians to identify suitable digitally available alternatives.

Requesting articles and chapters from another institution

If we don't have the article or chapter you need in the University of Exeter library collections you can request chapter scans, articles from other institutions using this library search form.

These are usually supplied as PDFs in just a few working days.

Please check library search first to make sure we don't already have what you need in our collections.

SCONUL access membership for local library access

Accessing your local University libraries

It is strongly recommended that you apply to the SCONUL access scheme so that you can access your local academic libaries for study space, reference access to books and in most cases also to join and be able to borrow books.

  1. Apply online via SCONUL Access.   NB Only one application is required to access multiple libraries.  As part of this process you will see which institutions you are eligible to visit. 
  2. Wait to receive SCONUL Access reply email
  3. Follow instructions in the email
  4. Read the SCONUL Access User Guide
  5. Check with host institution before visiting. Access may be restricted during busy periods (e.g. exams)

To qualify for SCONUL Access you must be registered as a library user.

If you don't have a Unicard

You will need to present photo ID as well as your approval email when you visit a library within the scheme.  If you do not have a physical student ID card with a photo, other forms of ID (including virtual IDs) are permissible in lieu of, as long as they include a photo.

Acceptable photographic ID:

  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • National ID card
  • Student card showing expiry date
  • Staff card showing expiry date (i.e. NHS, University)
  • Police / Customs / Home Office Warrant Card
  • Forces ID card
  • Photocard from another UK Legal Deposit Library (BL, National Libraries of Scotland and Wales, Bodleian Libraries, TCD)
