Electronic Resources Help: Clearing Cookies

Online guidance and information about the Library's electronic resources

Error messages like 'Proxy error', 'invalid response', '404 error' or 'The page isn't redirecting properly' can often be caused by cookies on your web browser.  To fix this, you will need to clear the cookies in this browser.  Details of how to do this can be found below.

How to clear all your cookies and cache

To delete all cookies and cache you need to go into your browser menu.

In Firefox or Chrome:

Press Ctrl + Shift + Del .  This will open a pop-up window from where you can delete your cookies & cache.

In Safari on a Mac:

1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac. Choose "Safari" -> "Settings" -> "Privacy".

2. Click "Manage Website Data".

3. Choose one or more websites, then "Remove" or Remove All".

These instructions are also available through Apple's Safari User Guide. For guidance on clearing your cache and cookies on an iPhone or iPad, follow these instructions.

Alternatives...

You don't necessarily have to clear your cookies and cache to fix the problem.

  • Try using a different browser.
  • Try opening a new private window in you current browser.  For Firefox this is Ctrl+Shift+P , for Chrome it is Ctrl+Shift+N. On a Mac using Safari, go to "File" > "New Private Window". Now try accessing the page you wanted from this window.
