What is RNIB Bookshare?

RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) Bookshare UK education collection is a free online resource that allows educators to download curriculum materials in a range of formats and adapt them to suit personal reading needs of print-disabled learners.

Thousands of educators and learners in the UK have access to thiscollection of accessible books and images covering Early Years to Higher Education. 

The service enables learners who cannot read standard print, including those with dyslexia or who are blind or partially sighted, to read the same books, at the same time as their peers, giving them the same educational opportunities.

Who qualifies to access RNIB Bookshare?

Students with:

  • Visual impairment: blind and partially sighted
  • Specific Learning Difficulty: Dyslexia, Autism , ADHD
  • Physical disability: if it significantly affects use of printed materials

Dolphin EasyReader

What is Dolphin EasyReader?

Dolphin EasyReader is a great, easy-to-use accessible reading app created by a well-known assistive technology provider. It provides an easy experience for learners with print disabilities and allows you to read any book your way.

It is highly recommended by RNIB and integrates seamlessly with RNIB's Bookshare database of accessible texts. Basic functionality includes text-to-speech and magnification. Downloading to your device for free, you can then open up texts from collections including RNIB Bookshare and listen with large text accompaniment. This is EasyReader's key advantage over other apps and software.

Premium functionality is not free, but you can download the free version of this app for a wide range of laptops and mobile devices.

Who should use Dolphin EasyReader?

  • RNIB Bookshare users: anybody who already has a Bookshare account and regularly downloads texts from the platform
  • Visually impaired users: anybody who likes to read on-screen texts with magnification or colour contrast
